ABOUT
The Helen & Keith Barrett Scholarship is established to honor these past civic leaders of the Mount Vernon community.
Helen was the first woman president of the Mount Vernon Education Association and for decades was a beloved teacher at Washington Elementary School. She co-edited several books on the history of Skagit County, and was active in many charitable organizations.
Keith was a past president of the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club and volunteered countless hours to local causes, including the Skagit Friendship House and the Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.
This two-year scholarship is awarded to a female student graduating from Mount Vernon High School who has exhibited outstanding leadership abilities and who is committed to developing those skills at college in order to make the world, and communities like Mount Vernon, better places. Ideally, she will be passionate about a field of study, exhibit a well roundedness through her interest in a sport, music, drama, debate, or a similar pursuit.

- Female students from Mount Vernon High School who are pursuing a college education
- Demonstration of leadership abilities

$2,000 each year for two consecutive years

- Essay #1: Describe an experience in your life that required you to take initiative as a leader (character limit: 2500)
- Essay #2: Describe something you are passionate about in terms of field of study, sport, music, hobby, volunteer work, or a similar pursuit (character limit: 2500)
- High School Transcript and Cumulative GPA
- Did you participate in any college readiness programs? (examples: AVID, Compass to Campus, Gear Up, etc.)
- Signed Letter of Recommendation
- List extracurricular activities
- University/College of choice and reasons why
- Describe your college goals, including your academic goals, development of skills, and networking
