​2023 SCF Grant Requests
Your opportunity to support some of the
greatest needs in our Skagit community

Each year, the Skagit Community Foundation administers competitive grant cycles to support local nonprofits in Skagit County.

This year, we are providing a new opportunity for you to become involved and to learn about the incredible work happening in our community every day.

Below is a selection of 50 out of the total 127 grant proposals submitted, listed alphabetically.

​These online grant requests provide an invitation for you to donate to support the request, as well as learn more about each of the organizations and their work in our community. Each donation made through this online catalog fully contributes to the funding request (except for credit card processing fees).

Anacortes Family Center

General Operating - $15,000 Requested
AFC's intensive program has been honored with the distinction of being one of the most successful shelters in the state at getting families out of homelessness and fully self-sufficient within 60-90 days

Anacortes Schools Foundation

Impact Summer Learning - $5,000 Requested
IMPACT is a district-sponsored targeted program for young learners (rising Kindergarten through 5th grade) who are in need of additional academic and social-emotional support during the summer months.

Barrier Breakers FOundation

Transportation Program - $7,500 Requested
Our program enables our unsheltered participants transportation to and from appointments, drug and alcohol treatment, court dates, job interviews, as well as to other local community services.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit Valley

Boys & Girls Club Mentoring Program - $40,000 Requested
Having mentoring time with volunteers and staff not only provides our members with more academic support, but also helps them socially and emotionally.


BRIGID COLLINS FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER

Responding to Crimes Against Children - $20,000 Requested
Brigid Collins is the only provider of Children's Advocacy Services in Skagit County. This request supports their response to child abuse and other crimes against children, as well as those who cannot pay for treatment.

Camp Korey

Summer Camp for Children with Life-Altering Illnessess -
$15,000 Requested

Camp Korey provides year-round camp programs for Puget Sound children and families living with life-altering medical conditions. 

Catholic Community Services Farmworker Center

Farmworker Center Emergency Needs - $4,965 Requested
Serving the Indigenous/Latino farmworker community of Skagit Valley. We do not want our families to choose between buying a bus pass or paying for a driving license to get to the FWC versus buying food or other basic essentials for their families. 

Children of the Valley

Expanded Children of the Valley Services - $50,000 Requested
COV is free for all participating students, providing after-school care, learning, and enrichment activities, COV focuses on family support and culturally-centered learning. Children served in Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, and Burlington doubled to 234. 

Children's Museum of Skagit County

CMSC Scholarship & Equity Fund - $7,500 Requested
The Scholarship Program has grown tremendously over the years in order to support all children and families and ensure access to all: no one is denied access to the Museum or its programs. The demand continues to increase, as more organizations and individuals seek support. 

Chinook Enterprises

Upgrades to Facility or Equipment for Community Employment Services Dept. - $9,600 Requested
Chinook Enterprises creates economic opportunities for individuals with disabilities with successful employment. Employment Specialists are using laptops that have outlived their capabilities, they sometimes crash or freeze mid services. 

College Success Foundation

Emergency Assistance Fund for Students from Low-Income Families - $10,000 Requested
CSF improves educational equity for students challenged by systemic and financial barriers to higher education. CSF's Emergency Assistance Fund for college students helps pay for rent, utilities, food, laptops, transportation, college fees and other urgent expenses.

Communities In Schools of Whatcom-Skagit

CIS of Whatcom-Skagit - $30,000 Requested
We are now able to provide services in the Anacortes , Burlington-Edison, Mount Vernon and Sedro-Woolley School Districts. In addition to food, food vouchers, gas cards, toiletries, school supplies, water bottles, and clothing, we are hoping to also provide rent assistance to families on the verge of being homeless.

Community Action of Skagit County

Seniors & Disabled Services Program - $20,000 Requested
With the support of a dedicated cadre of community volunteers, Community Action’s Senior & Disabled Services Program offers assistance with housekeeping, shopping, meal preparation, yard work, transportation, moving, and minor home repair work. Community Action also serves as the safety net provider for those who are unable to utilize paratransit services.

Concrete Youth Sports Association

Affordable Registration Cost - $5,000 Requested
We strive to provide a high-quality sports experience in an effort to help all youth, regardless of income or ability, develop sound character and values that will help them succeed throughout the rest of their lives. The US child poverty rate is 5.2%; Concrete School District is sitting well above that at 13.7% and 29% of our kids are living in single parent homes.

Consejo Counseling & Referral Services

Skagit County Behavioral Health Workforce Development - $20,000 Requested
We aim to hire and retain a committed workforce to serve BIPOC and monolingual undocumented and uninsured immigrants while receiving equitable, culturally and linguistically competent care for: behavioral health, substance abuse disorder treatment, as well as youth & family services.

Family Promise of SKagit Valley

General Operation: Housing Case Manager - $27,000 Requested
One of the huge struggles we had over this last year was being able to keep up with a competitive wage spike for Case Managers and Human Services workers. We had a turnover of three Case Managers in the last year, which left our service team really stretched.

Foster Hearts

Foster Closet Outreach - $4,000 Requested
Foster Hearts offers resources and support to approximately 250 kids who are currently experiencing foster care in Skagit County. Our Foster Closet provides a wide variety of free items such as clothing, shoes, sports equipment, diapers, formula, accessories, toys, children's equipment (car seats, cribs, etc.), school supplies, and more to help take care of foster children.

Foundation for Academic Endeavors

Foundation for Academic Endeavors - $25,000 Requested
In Skagit County we are fortunate to have a vibrant diverse community with over 60% of students identifying as Latino. At FAE, we invest our efforts in making sure that students and families are supported at all stages of their education, from preschool through college and career.

Friends of the Anacortes community Forest Lands

Forest Discovery Summer Day Camp - $5,000 Requested
With full-day programming for the older kids and half-day for the younger, Forest Discovery will achieve a total of 1056 nature hours with children from Skagit County. There is no other program in Skagit County providing the level of engagement and benefit for this many kids at zero cost to them or their families. ​

Glacier Peak Institute

Summer Adventures for Concrete Youth - $7,024 Requested
GPI works to support the under-served youth of Skagit and Snohomish counties through free outdoor education and recreation activities offered year round. Glacier Peak Institute (GPI) is seeking funding to support our 2023 summer programming for Concrete youth aged ten and up. The need for our programs in this area is high. ​

HOOP For the Valley

Hoop for the Valley - $18,000 Requested
Hoop for the Valley, which is a newly formed 501(c)(3) organization founded in honor of Ethan Chapin’s life by sharing the joy of basketball with kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity he cherished during his short life.  ​HFV is sponsoring two basketball clinics in the summer of 2023.

The Humane Society Of Skagit Valley

Onsite Spay & Neuter Clinic - $35,000 Requested
There is an absence of affordable spay and neuter clinics in the valley. Since there are no low-income clinics in Skagit or Island counties, pet alteration is out of reach for many low-income community members. We are dedicated to stopping the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable, and treatable homeless cats and dogs through an onsite, low-cost spay and neuter clinic.

Immigrant Resources & Immediate Support

Immigrant Bridge Assistance Program - $20,000 Requested
IRIS needs funding to continue direct service to families and individuals in need in Skagit County. In 2022, IRIS assisted 29 Ukrainian families who fled the war. $4,000 is requested for administrative costs and $16,000 requested for direct financial assistance for basic needs.

Island Health Foundation

Diabetes Education Support - $5,000 Requested
There are currently only two diabetes education programs in Skagit County (Island Health and Skagit Regional). With an estimated 9% of the Skagit County population living with diabetes, funding to support our education program is crucial to ensure diabetic and pre-diabetic patients are empowered to manage their diabetes and improve their vitality. 

Junior Achievement of WA

General Operating Support - $20,000 Requested
JA inspires and prepares young people to succeed in a global economy though scalable, experientially-based educational programs focused on: financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and career and work readiness. JA programs in Skagit County schools are taught by community and business mentors and partner educators. ​

Lincoln Theatre Foundation

Lincoln Players Theatre School & Skagit Theatre Camp -
​$4,000 Requested

Skagit Theatre Camp runs from July 17-29, 2023. The $4000 request to help fund at least five $400 scholarships, with the remaining $2000 used to hire High School Interns to assist the Skagit Theatre Camp Directors. The funding will be used to pay tuition for families in need as sign up begins in late April 2023.

Mount Baker Council, Boy Scouts of America

Scouting in Hispanic & Latino Communities in Skagit -
​$10,000 Requested

In 2023, the Mount Baker Council is actively working to increase Scouting among minority and low-income communities. Funding will allow us to extend this opportunity to underserved youth in our communities.

Mount Vernon Library Foundation

Capital Funding for the Mount Vernon Library Commons - $15,000 Requested
The Mount Vernon Library Commons will expand current library services and add new services. The building is currently 89% funded and has a funding gap of $6million to be raised by government grants and community donations. We have raised over $1.2 million so far.

Museum of Northwest Art

Art for Everyone: Building Creative, Courageous, Confident Communicators through MoNA Link - $7,500 Requested
MoNA Link engages more than 20 teachers and 500 students each year in hands-on arts learning through classroom and museum visits. A grant of $7,500 will support MoNA’s efforts to increase participation of our most high-need schools in the MoNA Link art education program.

Neighbors In Need Food Bank

Building Window Replacement - $59,000 Requested
Our building (owned) was built in the 1940's and, e still have the original aluminum single pane windows. We feel that it is a necessary part of our continued operations to replace all of these windows with new, more energy efficient windows. We have received a grant from PSE to install solar panels in May.

New Earth Recovery

Operational Funds - $10,000 Requested
New Earth Recovery continues to be the only Skagit County provider of long-term recovery housing with staffing, mentorship, and a relapse prevention program. The funds will be used to support our operating budget through December of 2023.

Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program

Book Up Summer - $10,000 Requested
Book Up Summer gives students in grades K–2 reading material for summer vacation. This year, Book Up Summer will serve 1,590 students in the Mount Vernon district; 69% of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 41% are English language learners, and 15% are migrants.

Secret Harbor

Skilled Mental Health Services for Foster Youth in Skagit County - $3,500 Requested
These services include evaluation of a child’s mental health, developing an individual treatment plan, ongoing individual or family therapy, medication management, and crisis assistance. This request could fund approximately 22 hours of psychiatric evaluation at $155/hour by a pediatric psychiatrist, or just under 47 hours of counseling with a Master’s level therapist at $75/hour.

Sedro-Woolley Museum

New Roof - $17,785 Requested
We are seeking funding to replace the deteriorating roof that houses our archives room. With our ever-growing collection, we are running out of space but can not address the addition of extra warm rooms until we know they can be housed safely. Our leaking roof doesn't allow for such growth and is putting our current collections at risk of damage.

Skagit Animals In Need

SAIN Animal Assistance Program - $5,000 Requested
The AAP is an assistance program to help pet owners with unexpected pet related expenses.  AAP assistance is typically used for emergency veterinary care, or to provide pet food during times of unexpected financial hardship.

Skagit Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services

Operational Expenses - $20,000 Requested
In 2022, Skagit County continued to see increased rates of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and increased numbers of high-risk victims in danger of being seriously injured or killed. In 2022, Skagit DVSAS provided shelter for 120 individuals including 54 children under the age of 12.

Skagit Gleaners

Expanding BIPOC Farmer Collaboration - $13,000 Requested
Last year Skagit Gleaners created a new project in partnership with Northwest Agriculture Business Center (NABC) called the BIPOC Farmer Collaboration. Skagit Gleaners purchased weekly amounts of culturally relevant foods from local BIPOC farms: providing both foods to the growing Mexican-indigenous migrant member base and to advance economic stability among local BIPOC farmers.

Skagit Legal Aid

Closing the Access to Justice Gap in the Skagit Valley with Increased Pro Bono Attorneys​ - $55,000 Requested
Pro bono attorneys are often in the position of greater neutrality that may allow them to interact with the courts in a different way than SLA staff to effect positive systemic changes. The pandemic and the transformation of landlord/tenant law resulted in a decrease in volunteer attorney participation statewide; this was exacerbated in Skagit County as a result of staff vacancies during 2019-2020.

Skagit Regional Health Foundation

Cardiac Catheterization Labs Project - $25,000 Requested
More than 3,000 patients are treated in the three cardiac labs at Skagit Valley Hospital each year. WA State hospitals and health care system losses grew to $2.57 billion in the first nine months of 2022. These losses were due to: a labor shortage, increased costs of pharmaceuticals and supplies, & a state-mandated pause on surgery in early 2022. Our current equipment is nearing the end of its' service life while the demand for its use is increasing.

Skagit Symphony

School and Family Concerts - $5,800 Requested
Skagit Skymphony brings music to life for the children of our community! Our orchestra is composed of musicians from around the region who volunteer their time and talent to introduce young people to the instruments and music of an orchestra in an entertaining and engagin way. Our school concert series is presented to all Skagit Valley 5th graders at no cost to the students or their schools, and our Fmaily Concert and Children's Music Fair welcome families to an educational and fun Sunday afternoon.

Skagit/Islands Head Start

Child & Family Mental Health Support - $10,000 Requested
A total of 18 Head Start preschool classes provide early childhood education for 291 children annually. 25% of our enrolled preschool children have a developmental disability in addition to being low income. Over 10% of our enrolled families enter while experiencing homelessness. A licensed mental health consultant will provide behavioral and emotional support for students and families.

Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland

SPF Operations - $19,000 Requested
The Farmland Legacy Program has permanently conserved farming uses nearly 14,000 acres of farmland in Skagit County. Our work is complex, requiring extensive staff time. The ongoing work of maintaining the organization and advocating for the land protection policies which underpin our success is critical.

Special Olympics Washington

Skagit County Activities - $5,000 Requested
Sports training and athletic competition gives children and adults with IDD opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and share gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community. Funds will directly support sports training, uniforms, transportation for competitions, and equipment. 

Triumph Teen Life Center

Triumph Teen Life Center - $18,000 Requested
Opened in the Spring of 2022, all teens in middle and high schoolers are welcome but the majority are Latino. We have built a food pantry and provided over 800 backpacks to youth in our community. Our free programs give students opportunities for homework support, dance classes, an art and music studio, and life-skills seminars and workshops. The past year we served over 90 individuals.

United Way of Skagit County

Diaper Bank of Skagit County - $15,000 Requested
The Diaper Bank of Skagit County provides diapers, wipes, and formula throughout the county through strategic partnerships with community organizations.  Most recently, we have added adult incontinence supplies (adult diapers) to the support we offer.

Vamos Outdoors Project

¡Vamos a Skagit! - $20,000 Requested
Vamos’ mission is “Building Community Through Connection to the Land and Access to the Outdoors.” All Vamos programs are free to participants, and include food, transportation and all necessary equipment. Vamos serves Latino, Migrant, and Multilingual youth in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Washington Vocational Services

Adult Transition to Independence Center (ATTIC) -
​$10,000 Requested

ATTIC is a program for students with disabilities aged 18-21 to develop workforce and life skills. ATTIC is the only local program with a 3 year curriculum focused on vocational and life skills. For many students, their first experience with work comes through the ATTIC program.

Washington's National Park Fund

North Cascades Parkmedic Training - $15,000 Requested
“Parkmedic” certification was created to provide park rangers with medical training specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of national parks. The North Cascades should have three to four Parkmedics employed at all times, but the park is currently down to one. We seek to add two Parkmedics to the park’s roster.

Welcome Home Skagit

Homeless Support Services - $17,000 Requested
Our Essential Needs Program provides food, clothing, emergency duffle bag kits, hygiene products, bus passes, gas cards, financial assistance for certain essential documents such as birth certificates, driver's licenses, Washington State I.D., and other emergent & immediate needs. Our Peer Support Program provides one on one support & resource navigation.

Youthnet

Meeting Individual Needs of Youth Aging Out of Foster Care - $10,000 Requested
Youthnet provides independent living case management for youth ages 15 to 23 who are currently in foster care or have spent at least 30 days in foster care after turning 15. $10,000 will meet the needs of young people (housing deposits, transportation assistance, and other expenses for which young people typically turn to their parents) that fall outside of the state budget allocation.
